Chapter 14 - THE DANCE SHE CHOSE

Six months after the trial, the new children's hospital wing opened.

It had been funded through recovered assets, legitimate donations, and a transparent charitable program overseen by independent trustees.

Clara had helped design the family support spaces.

Not the grand entrance.

Not the donor wall.

The quiet rooms where parents could rest.

The play areas where children could forget, for a little while, why they were in a hospital.

Dominic attended the opening without security surrounding him.

He stood near the back while Clara delivered a short speech.

She spoke about accountability.

About trust.

About the people who had refused to remain silent.

She did not mention Antonio.

She did not mention Vincent.

She did not make herself the center of the story.

When the ceremony ended, Dominic approached her.

"You were wonderful."

Clara smiled.

"You say that every time."

"Because it's usually true."

She laughed.

He offered her a small envelope.

"What's this?"

"An invitation."

Inside was a card.

Dinner for two.

Friday evening.

No guests.

No speeches.

No obligations.

Clara looked at him.

"Are you asking me on a date?"

"I was hoping you'd say yes."

She pretended to consider.

"Will there be dancing?"

"Only if you want."

"Will you stop the music?"

Dominic's expression softened.

"Not unless you ask."

Friday evening arrived with a warm breeze and a sky streaked pink.

Dominic took Clara to a small restaurant overlooking Biscayne Bay.

There were no photographers.

No business associates.

No one waiting for his approval.

They ate seafood, shared dessert, and talked about ordinary things.

Sophie had accepted a promotion in Boston.

Rebecca was completing graduate studies.

Mara had begun rebuilding her life.

Matteo was planning to marry his longtime girlfriend.

Clara teased Dominic about his terrible cooking.

He accused her of secretly enjoying it.

Then a pianist began playing a slow melody.

Dominic looked toward the small dance floor.

"Would you like to?"

Clara hesitated.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she remembered.

The ballroom.

The pain.

The silence.

Dominic noticed.

"We don't have to."

Clara looked at him.

Then she stood.

"I know."

She offered him her hand.

They moved slowly.

His palm rested gently against her back.

She did not flinch.

On the third turn, Dominic felt her relax against him.

He closed his eyes.

He remembered the gala.

The taped ribs.

The terror hidden behind her smile.

He had stopped the music that night because he finally noticed her pain.

Now he understood something more important.

He needed to listen long before she reached the point of breaking.

Clara leaned closer.

"What are you thinking?"

"That I almost lost you."

She rested her cheek against his shoulder.

"You did lose me for a while."

"I know."

"But you found your way back."

Dominic kissed her hair.

"No," he whispered. "You showed me where to look."

May you like

The pianist continued playing.

And this time, neither of them wanted the music to stop.
