Chapter 6 - THE TRUST WITH HER NAME ON IT

Clara stared at the document until the words blurred.

"That's impossible."

Dominic stood behind her chair, careful not to touch her injured side.

"My father died fourteen years before we met."

"Then why is my name here?"

The trust had been amended three months before their wedding.

The beneficiary field contained her full legal name.

Clara Elizabeth Whitmore.

Her maiden name.

Dominic called the attorney listed on the document.

The number was disconnected.

The law firm had dissolved eight years earlier.

Its senior partner had died in a boating accident.

Every answer produced another question.

The following morning, Rebecca arrived at the office of an independent attorney, Naomi Pierce.

Clara attended by video call because her ribs still made travel difficult.

Rebecca was twenty-eight, with dark curls and a guarded expression.

"My mother didn't steal anything," she began.

"Then why did she disappear?" Dominic asked.

"Because she found out what your uncle was doing."

Rebecca explained that Antonio had used charitable foundations to move money through shipping contracts and fictitious medical purchases.

Mara had uncovered the transactions.

When she threatened to report them, Antonio accused her of theft and forced her into hiding.

But Mara had managed to preserve a set of original records.

"Why didn't she go to the authorities?" Clara asked.

"She tried."

Rebecca's voice tightened.

"The officer she contacted was on Antonio's payroll."

Dominic remembered the uniformed man in the warehouse video.

Commander Patrick Rourke.

A senior police official who had attended the gala.

Rebecca continued.

"Your father suspected Antonio years before he died. He created a protected trust for anyone who could expose the financial scheme."

Dominic frowned.

"Why Clara?"

"Because the trust was designed to protect a future independent trustee appointed through the hospital foundation."

Clara's appointment to the foundation's oversight committee had activated the provision.

The trust was not a personal gift.

It was a legal mechanism intended to fund an independent investigation and protect witnesses.

Antonio had apparently discovered the arrangement.

He needed Clara to sign documents releasing control.

When she refused, Vincent was sent to pressure her.

Dominic listened without interruption.

Then he asked the question he had been avoiding.

"How did my father die?"

Rebecca looked toward Naomi.

The attorney opened a sealed file.

"Officially, a cardiac event."

Dominic nodded.

He had been twenty-three.

His father had collapsed during a business dinner.

The doctors said it was sudden.

Tragic.

Unavoidable.

Naomi placed a document before the camera.

"This is a letter written by your father two days before his death."

Dominic leaned forward.

The letter accused Antonio of stealing from the family's legitimate companies.

It also described threats against employees who questioned missing funds.

At the bottom, his father had written:

If anything happens to me, investigate Antonio before trusting his explanations.

Dominic stared at the signature.

For fourteen years, he had mourned a father whose death had shaped every decision he made.

Now he was being asked to reconsider the entire foundation of his life.

"Is there evidence Antonio killed him?" Dominic asked.

Naomi shook her head.

"Not enough to make that claim."

Dominic closed his eyes.

He wanted certainty.

Instead, he had a warning from a dead man and a lifetime of misplaced trust.

Clara watched him through the screen.

"Dominic."

He opened his eyes.

"Whatever happened to your father, don't let Antonio decide what you become next."

For the first time that day, Dominic looked directly at her.

And he listened.
