Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT CAMILLE LOST CONTROL
Camille discovered Nora's pregnancy before Evan did.
Not through a confession.
Through a medical invoice accidentally forwarded to an old shared email account.
Camille had access to that account because she'd been managing Evan's personal correspondence.
She stared at the document.
Then smiled.
A pregnancy.
After ten years.
She knew what it would mean to Evan.
And she knew what it could mean to her own future.
That evening, she called Nora.
Nora almost ignored the number.
Then answered.
“Hello?”
Camille's voice was smooth.
“Congratulations.”
Nora went cold.
“On what?”
“The baby.”
Silence.
Nora's hand moved toward her stomach.
“How do you know?”
Camille laughed softly.
“Your husband isn't very careful with his accounts.”
Nora's face hardened.
“What do you want?”
Camille paused.
Then said, “I think we should talk.”
“No.”
“Nora—”
“No.”
Nora's voice was steady.
“You don't get to call me about my pregnancy.”
Camille's tone changed.
“Evan deserves to know.”
“He will.”
“When?”
“When I decide how to tell him.”
Camille laughed bitterly.
“You're using the baby to punish him.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Then said, “My child is not a weapon.”
She ended the call.
Her hands were shaking.
But she didn't call Evan.
