Chapter 11 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

Evan learned about the pregnancy when Nora told him herself.
They met in Margaret's office.
Neutral ground.
No emotional ambush.
No dramatic confrontation.
Just two people sitting across from each other with a marriage ending between them.
Evan looked exhausted.
He had lost weight.
His eyes were shadowed.
But Nora refused to mistake suffering for change.
She placed the ultrasound photograph on the table.
Evan stared.
Then looked up.
“What is this?”
Nora swallowed.
“I'm pregnant.”
His face went white.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he reached for the photograph.
His hands trembled.
“Nora.”
She looked down.
He stared at the tiny image.
“How far along?”
“Fourteen weeks.”
His eyes filled.
“A baby?”
Nora nodded.
Evan began crying.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
He covered his face with both hands.
For years, he'd wanted a child.
He'd imagined teaching a son to ride a bicycle.
Holding a daughter on his shoulders.
Building a family.
And now, when that dream had finally become real, his wife was leaving him.
He looked at Nora.
“Please.”
She closed her eyes.
“Nora, we can fix this.”
She shook her head.
“Evan.”
“I'll end everything with Camille.”
“You already should have.”
“I'll go to counseling.”
“You should have done that before.”
His face crumpled.
“I love you.”
Nora looked at him.
For a moment, she remembered the man she'd married.
The young entrepreneur who used to bring her coffee in bed.
Who once drove three hours to surprise her on her birthday.
Who cried with her after their first miscarriage.
Then she remembered the man who had stopped coming home.
She swallowed.
“I believe you love the idea of us.”
Evan stared.
“But you stopped loving me in the ways that mattered.”
His tears fell.
Nora continued.
“You can be this baby's father.”
She placed her hand over her stomach.
“But that doesn't mean you get to remain my husband.”
May you like
Evan closed his eyes.
And for the first time, he understood that regret did not automatically earn forgiveness.
