Chapter 2 - THE MORNING SHE TOOK BACK HER NAME

By six-thirty, Nora had packed two suitcases.
Clothes.
Medical records.
Her grandmother's jewelry.
A photograph of her late mother.
And the small wooden box containing every ultrasound image from pregnancies that hadn't survived.
She stood in the bedroom doorway.
The room was enormous.
Beautiful.
Empty.
She had spent ten years trying to make it feel like a home.
Now she understood why it never had.
A home required two people willing to live inside it.
Evan had merely slept there between meetings.
Leonard waited near the front entrance.
His eyes moved toward the suitcases.
“Are you leaving?”
Nora nodded.
“For a while.”
He swallowed.
“Does Mr. Carlisle know?”
“No.”
Leonard looked toward the staircase.
Then back at her.
“Would you like me to call a driver?”
“I've already arranged one.”
He hesitated.
“May I ask where you're going?”
Nora smiled sadly.
“Somewhere nobody expects me to be Mrs. Carlisle.”
Leonard's eyes filled.
He had known Evan since childhood.
He loved him.
But he had watched Nora slowly disappear inside the marriage.
And he knew love did not require pretending not to see suffering.
“Your mother would be proud of you,” he said.
Nora's composure cracked.
Her mother had died four years earlier.
She would have known exactly what to say.
Probably something sharp about Evan's character.
Then something gentle about Nora's heart.
Nora stepped forward and hugged Leonard.
“Thank you.”
He held her carefully.
Then whispered, “Whatever happens, you deserve kindness.”
She nodded.
And walked out.
Nora drove north.
Not to New York.
Not to a luxury hotel.
To a small coastal town in Rhode Island where her mother had once owned a weathered cottage.
The house had been empty for years.
Its white paint was peeling.
The porch needed repairs.
The garden was overgrown.
But when Nora unlocked the door, she smelled salt air and old cedar.
And for the first time in months, she could breathe.
She set her suitcase down.
Then sat on the floor.
Her phone rang.
Evan.
She watched it ring.
Then stop.
A message appeared.
Where are you?
Another.
Leonard says you left. What's going on?
Nora closed her eyes.
Then typed:
I saw the video. My attorney will contact yours.
May you like
She pressed send.
And turned off her phone.
