Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Camille Dane arrived at Evan's office on Monday morning carrying two coffees.

She smiled.

“Morning.”

Evan didn't look up.

“We need to talk.”

Camille stopped.

“What happened?”

“Nora knows.”

Her smile disappeared.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she placed the coffees on his desk.

“About us?”

“Yes.”

Camille exhaled.

“Well.”

Evan stared.

“Well?”

She crossed her arms.

“You knew this couldn't stay secret forever.”

He looked at her.

“Did you send the video?”

Camille's eyes widened.

“What?”

“The video from the rooftop.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you've been asking me to leave my wife.”

Camille's expression hardened.

“And you kept promising you would.”

Evan looked away.

She stepped closer.

“Don't make me the villain because you couldn't make a decision.”

Evan stared.

For the first time, he saw something he'd ignored.

Camille didn't love him the way Nora had.

She loved what being with him represented.

Status.

Power.

Access.

And perhaps he had loved the same things about her.

The admiration.

The excitement.

The absence of difficult conversations about infertility, grief, and the marriage he'd neglected.

He swallowed.

“This is over.”

Camille went still.

“Excuse me?”

“Us.”

Her face changed.

“You don't get to do that.”

Evan looked at her.

“I just did.”

Camille leaned forward.

“You think Nora will take you back?”

He said nothing.

She smiled coldly.

“Then you don't know your wife as well as you think.”

She walked out.

May you like

Evan stared at the door.

And wondered whether Camille was right.
