Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO WAIT

Evan changed.
Not overnight.
Not because Nora threatened him.
And not because he believed change would win her back.
He began therapy.
Stepped away from unnecessary business travel.
Reorganized his company.
And learned to show up for Clara.
He attended pediatric appointments.
Changed diapers.
Learned how to soothe her when she cried.
He never missed a scheduled visit.
And he stopped asking Nora to forgive him.
One afternoon, he arrived at the cottage carrying Clara's favorite blanket.
Nora opened the door.
He smiled.
“She fell asleep in the car.”
Nora looked at their daughter.
Then at him.
“Thank you.”
Evan nodded.
He hesitated.
“Nora?”
“Yes?”
“I know I can't undo what I did.”
She said nothing.
He continued.
“But I want you to know something.”
She waited.
“I finally understand what you meant.”
Nora looked at him.
“About what?”
“Love being something you do.”
His eyes filled.
“Not something you say when it's convenient.”
Nora swallowed.
Evan smiled sadly.
“I hope someday you can forgive me.”
She looked down.
Then answered honestly.
“Maybe.”
He nodded.
May you like
“That has to be enough.”
And for the first time, he meant it.
