Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO CAME HOME TOO LATE

Evan Carlisle had never felt fear like the moment he read Nora's message.

He was standing in the kitchen of their Westport home.

The anniversary dinner still sat on the table.

The candles had burned out.

The flowers had begun to wilt.

And Nora was gone.

He stared at the message.

I saw the video.

His stomach dropped.

He knew exactly which video.

Camille.

The rooftop lounge.

The kiss.

He had told himself it was a mistake.

That the affair was temporary.

That he could end it before Nora discovered anything.

But he'd been lying to himself for months.

Now the truth had arrived.

And Nora wasn't there to forgive him.

He called again.

No answer.

He called Leonard.

“Where is she?”

Leonard's voice was quiet.

“Mrs. Carlisle left this morning.”

“Where?”

“She didn't tell me.”

Evan's jaw tightened.

“Leonard, I'm asking you—”

“And I'm telling you, sir, that she left.”

Silence.

Evan stared.

Leonard had never spoken to him that way.

Then the old man added, “She waited for you last night.”

Evan closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“No, sir.”

Leonard's voice broke.

“I don't think you do.”

The call ended.

Evan stood motionless.

Then noticed the empty space beside Nora's plate.

An envelope had been there.

He remembered seeing it in the photograph she'd sent him earlier that afternoon.

A photograph of the anniversary table.

He hadn't opened it.

Hadn't asked.

Hadn't even replied.

May you like

Now it was gone.

And for the first time, Evan wondered what else he'd failed to notice.
