Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE HARBOR WENT DARK

The attack happened at a warehouse near Boston Harbor.

Vincent had gone there to review records with investigators.

Evelyn was nowhere near the site.

She was at Vanessa's apartment, working on her financial recovery plan.

Just after midnight, an electrical fire broke out at the warehouse.

Emergency crews responded.

Several employees were evacuated.

Vincent helped direct people toward the exits before firefighters took control.

He suffered minor smoke inhalation.

The fire damaged part of the building.

But the records had already been copied and secured.

The investigation continued.

Evelyn learned about the fire the next morning.

Her phone rang.

Vanessa answered first.

Then handed it to her.

“It's Vincent.”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then took the phone.

“Are you all right?”

His voice was tired.

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“I heard about the fire.”

“I'm safe.”

She swallowed.

“Good.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vincent said, “Evelyn?”

“Yes?”

“I found the contracts.”

Her heart tightened.

“And?”

“They were fraudulent.”

She looked down.

Vincent continued.

“My company was used without proper authorization.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. And the investigators have the evidence.”

She closed her eyes.

For the first time in days, she felt herself breathe.
