Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO COURT

Evelyn testified in court the following spring.
She wore a navy suit.
Her hair was pinned neatly.
Vanessa sat behind her.
Lily and Nathan sat beside her.
Vincent remained outside the courtroom until he was called as a witness in the related financial proceedings.
Evelyn answered each question carefully.
She explained the accounts.
The signatures.
The threats.
The control Grant had exercised over her finances and social life.
Grant's attorney challenged her memory.
Suggested she misunderstood the documents.
Asked whether she was angry about her marriage.
Evelyn took a breath.
Then answered calmly.
“I was afraid of my husband.”
The courtroom became silent.
She continued.
“But fear doesn't change what the documents show.”
Her voice steadied.
“My signature was forged. The accounts were opened without my consent. And I have spent months proving that I did not authorize those transactions.”
She looked toward the judge.
“I am not here because I want revenge.”
