Chapter 5 - THE HUSBAND WHO REFUSED TO LET GO
Grant called forty-three times in two days.
Evelyn didn't answer.
He sent flowers.
She refused delivery.
He sent a necklace.
She returned it through her attorney.
Then the messages changed.
You're destroying our marriage.
You don't understand what you're doing.
Come home before this gets ugly.
Evelyn saved every message.
Claire advised her not to engage directly.
Grant began contacting Vanessa.
Then Evelyn's sister Lily.
Then Nathan, Lily's new husband.
He told them Evelyn was having a breakdown.
That Vincent Moretti had manipulated her.
That she was confused.
Lily called Evelyn crying.
“Evie, what's happening?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Grant lied to you.”
Lily was silent.
Evelyn continued.
“He opened accounts in my name. He threatened me. And I'm not going back.”
Lily began crying.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Because I was ashamed.”
Lily's voice broke.
“You're my sister.”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“I know.”

For the first time since the wedding, Evelyn smiled.
