Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT OWN HER
Evelyn met Vincent for coffee two weeks later.
The investigation was ongoing.
But independent auditors had confirmed that the contracts bearing her name were fraudulent.
Vincent sat opposite her.
He looked tired.
For the first time, she noticed the faint lines around his eyes.
“You didn't have to come,” he said.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“I wanted to.”
He nodded.
She looked at him.
“Thank you for respecting my space.”
Vincent smiled.
“You asked for it.”
She laughed softly.
“Grant never would have.”
Vincent's expression changed.
“I'm not Grant.”
Evelyn looked down.
“I know.”
He continued.
“And I don't want you to trust me because I'm different from him.”
She looked up.
“I want you to trust me only if I earn it.”
Her eyes filled.
