Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO LEARNED TO SAY NO

Evelyn called Vincent that evening.

He answered immediately.

“Evelyn.”

She took a breath.

“I need to ask you something.”

His tone changed.

“What?”

“Does Moretti Maritime Services do business with Grant Mercer?”

Silence.

Then Vincent said, “Yes.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“How much?”

“I don't know the exact amount without reviewing the records.”

She swallowed.

“My name is on contracts connected to your company.”

Vincent went still.

“What contracts?”

She explained.

He listened.

Then said, “Evelyn, I didn't know.”

She wanted to believe him.

But she had believed Grant too.

“I need some space.”

Vincent was quiet.

Then answered, “All right.”

She swallowed.

“You're not going to argue?”

“No.”

“Or tell me I'm making a mistake?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Vincent continued.

“You have every reason to verify what I've told you.”

Her eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

He paused.

“Whatever you decide, the documents should go to your attorney.”

She nodded.

“They will.”

After the call ended, Evelyn sat alone.

For the first time, she had told a powerful man no.

And he had respected it.
