Chapter 4 - A ROOM WITH A LOCK SHE CONTROLLED

Evelyn spent her first night away from Grant in a small guest apartment owned by her friend Vanessa.

Vanessa arrived just after midnight.

She took one look at Evelyn and hugged her.

“Oh, Evie.”

Evelyn began crying.

Vanessa held her.

For years, Grant had told Evelyn that Vanessa was a bad influence.

Too independent.

Too outspoken.

Too suspicious of men.

Now Evelyn understood why.

Vanessa had always asked questions Grant didn't want answered.

She helped Evelyn upstairs.

The apartment had one bedroom.

A small kitchen.

And a lock Evelyn controlled herself.

Vanessa placed a spare key on the table.

“Only you have this one.”

Evelyn stared at it.

Then smiled through tears.

“Thank you.”

The next morning, Evelyn met with attorney Claire Donovan.

Claire listened carefully.

Then explained the steps Evelyn could take.

Preserve financial records.

Dispute fraudulent accounts.

Contact appropriate authorities.

Document threats.

Seek legal protection if necessary.

Evelyn took notes.

For the first time in months, the situation felt difficult but not impossible.

Claire looked at her.

“Do you have access to your personal documents?”

“Some.”

“Your passport?”

“Yes.”

“Bank statements?”

“Copies.”

“Good.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“What if Grant says I'm lying?”

Claire's expression softened.

“Then we rely on evidence.”

Evelyn looked down.

She had spent three years being told that her memory was unreliable.

That she misunderstood things.

That she was too sensitive.

Now someone was telling her the truth could be documented.

And that changed everything.
