Chapter 9 - The Engineer’s Dream

Four months later, the legal and corporate storm had cleared, leaving Moretti Global stronger, cleaner, and more transparent than ever before.

Vanessa and Julian had been sentenced by the United States District Court to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence Federal Penitentiary, with full forfeiture of all assets totaling $120 million.

On a brilliant, crisp spring morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dante and I walked across the sunlit courtyard of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dante had kept every single promise he made on the mountain ridge.

My father’s medical debts had been cleared to the last penny. And through a direct endowment from the Moretti Heritage Trust, I had been reinstated with full honors into the Advanced Aerospace & Mechanical Propulsion Laboratory, with every tuition and research expense fully funded.

We stopped beside the reflecting pool near the Great Dome.

“How does it feel to be back where you belong, Cara?” Dante asked, looking at me with a warm, genuine smile that had replaced his former coldness.

“It feels like breathing for the first time in three years, Dante,” I smiled, clutching my engineering blueprints to my chest.

Dante took both of my hands into his warm, strong palms, looking down into my eyes with infinite tenderness.

“When you pulled me out of that car, Cara,” Dante murmured, his deep voice filled with profound emotion, “you didn't just save my life. You reminded me that in a world full of greed and betrayal, there are souls made of pure gold and iron courage.”

He reached into his tailored coat, pulled out a small black velvet box, and opened it in the sunlight.

Inside was a delicate, brilliant-cut platinum ring shaped like a phoenix rising from flames.

“I don't want to be your employer, Cara,” Dante said softly. “I want to be your partner, your champion, and the man who stands beside you for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?”

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness welled in my eyes.

“Yes, Dante,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. “A thousand times, yes.”

Dante slid the ring onto my finger, pulled me into a fierce, passionate kiss as students and professors across the courtyard broke into spontaneous, joyful applause.
