Chapter 7 - The Ghost at the Memorial Gala

The massive mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung wide with a deafening crash.

Every single director, investor, and reporter froze in absolute, breathless horror.

Walking down the center aisle, dressed in a bespoke charcoal-grey three-piece suit, his posture straight, his grey eyes radiating lethal, absolute authority, was Dante Moretti.

Beside him walked myself—wearing an elegant, tailored navy wool suit, my hair styled with sharp precision, holding a sealed black federal evidence folio. Flanking us were Marcus Stone and eight armed Federal Marshals.

Vanessa Moretti stopped breathing. Her crystal water glass slipped from her numb fingers, shattering violently across the marble table.

Julian Sterling leaped to his feet, his chair screeching backward against the floorboards, his face draining of every single drop of color until he looked like carved chalk.

“D... Dante...?!” Julian stammered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. “You... you were in the car! The car exploded!”

“You sound disappointed, Julian,” Dante said, his footsteps echoing like a funeral march as he walked to the head of the table.

“It’s a ghost!” Vanessa shrieked, backing into the corner of the boardroom, clutching her pearl necklace with trembling, claw-like fingers. “It’s an imposter! Security! Shoot him!”

Not a single security guard moved. The building’s entire security network had been seized by federal agents twenty minutes earlier.

Dante reached the head of the table, stopped directly in front of Julian, and placed both hands flat on the polished marble.

“I am very much alive, Julian,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made the room turn freezing cold. “And I brought the waitress who pulled me out of the fire you lit.”
