Chapter 4 - The Widow's Golden Tear

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news of Dante Moretti’s fatal crash on Route 9 had dominated every national and international news network:

‘BREAKING: Billionaire Titan Dante Moretti Presumed Dead After Vehicle Plunges Over Mountain Ravine in Torrential Storm; Search Teams Recover Charred Wreckage.’

Inside the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower on Park Avenue, Vanessa Moretti was sitting in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing an immaculate black silk mourning dress and a veil of French lace.

Two dozen high-society friends, corporate directors, and television reporters filled the drawing room, offering condolences and wiping away tears.

Julian Sterling stood beside her chair, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his arm resting protectively over her shoulder as he spoke to the press with a sorrowful, rehearsed tremolo.

“Dante was more than my CEO; he was my brother,” Julian announced to the cameras, his eyes glistening with manufactured grief. “We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy. But Moretti Global must stand strong. As interim executive chairman, I will ensure Dante’s vision is protected.”

Vanessa lifted her veil, dabbing a pristine linen handkerchief at the corners of her dry eyes.

“My husband was my life,” Vanessa sobbed into the microphone. “I only ask for privacy as we prepare his memorial service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday.”

Across town, inside the Ridge safehouse, Dante and I were watching the live broadcast on the sixty-five-inch monitor.

Sitting beside us were Senior Special Agent Karen Vance of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Miller.

“Look at her,” Agent Vance said with open disgust, pointing to the screen. “She’s already wearing a five-carat emerald mourning ring purchased forty-eight hours before the crash.”

Dante didn't flinch. He sipped his espresso, watching his wife’s performance with terrifying, icy detachment.

“Let them enjoy their victory, Agent Vance,” Dante said calmly. “Have your forensic team finalized the tracking warrants on Julian’s offshore servers?”

“Everything is locked down,” Agent Vance replied, tapping her tablet. “The moment Julian attempts to execute the master trust transfer during Friday’s emergency shareholder summit, our forensic traps will trace every dollar directly to their shell bank in Zurich.”

Dante turned to me. “Are you ready for Friday, Cara?”

I looked down at my hands, feeling the steady, fierce resolve that had carried me through three years of hardship.

“I’m ready, Dante,” I replied.
