Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

At 9:00 AM on Friday morning, the 52nd-floor grand boardroom of Moretti Global Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan was packed to maximum capacity.
Thirty senior board directors, institutional shareholders, and Wall Street investors sat around the sixty-foot polished marble table beneath the glare of media broadcast lights.
Julian Sterling sat at the head of the table in a tailored black suit, radiating untouchable corporate triumph. Beside him sat Vanessa Moretti, draped in black velvet and diamonds, holding a gold-embossed leather folio.
“Esteemed members of the board,” Julian began, his voice booming across the silent room. “We gather today in the shadow of unimaginable loss. But as fiduciaries of a four-billion-dollar global conglomerate, we must ensure continuity.”
Julian slid thick contract binders across the table to the board members.
“These documents execute the emergency succession protocol outlined in Dante Moretti’s 2022 Testamentary Trust,” Julian continued smoothly. “By unanimous board consent, forty percent of the voting shares will transfer to Mrs. Vanessa Moretti, and I will be ratified as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.”
Lead Director Thomas Harrison adjusted his glasses, looking uneasy. “Julian, the coroner’s final forensic verification is still pending state certification. Standard probate procedures require a thirty-day waiting period.”
“We cannot afford thirty days of market uncertainty, Thomas!” Vanessa interjected, her voice sharp and commanding, dropping her mourning facade. “Our stock dropped eight percent yesterday! Dante would have wanted this transition executed without delay! Call the vote now!”
Julian raised his right hand. “All directors in favor of the immediate ratification of the succession protocol, signify by raising your hands.”

Twelve directors began lifting their hands.
“I’m afraid that vote is legally void, Julian,” a voice of cold thunder echoed from the back of the boardroom.
