Chapter 6 - The Return of the Hummingbird Pendant

"Now, Nathan," Theresa purred, pouring two glasses of champagne. "Where are the wire routing slips?"

I didn't reach for the champagne. I stood tall in the center of the kitchen, looking at the gold hummingbird pendant resting against her chest.

"Before we celebrate, Mom," I said softly, "there is one small item I need."

Theresa touched the pendant, her smile stiffening slightly. "What? The necklace?"

"Take it off," I said.

Brianna frowned, setting her glass down. "Nathan, Mom loves that pendant! Why are you making a big deal out of an old piece of jewelry?"

"Because I bought that necklace in Montreal with my first overtime check five years ago," I replied, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute steel. "I had it engraved with our wedding date on the back: To Lucy, my heart and soul. It was never yours, Theresa."

Theresa scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. "I kept it safe so Lucy wouldn't pawn it for drugs! She was stealing from us, Nathan!"

"Lucy didn't buy drugs, Theresa. Lucy had third-stage breast cancer while you bought granite countertops and leather recliners."

I took one slow step forward.

"Take it off and put it on the counter. Or the million-dollar wire is cancelled right now."

Theresa’s breath caught in her throat. The thought of losing one million dollars terrified her far more than any shred of shame. With trembling, furious fingers, she unclasped the gold chain and slammed the hummingbird pendant onto the marble island.

"There!" Theresa spat, her eyes flashing with venom. "Take the cheap trinket! You've become so petty, Nathan!"

I picked up the cool gold pendant, wiping it gently with my thumb, and placed it safely into my breast pocket beside my heart.

"Thank you, Mother," I said calmly. "I'll see you at the family dinner tonight."
