Chapter 5 - The Signed Confession on Legal Paper

At 10:00 AM the following morning, I arrived at the Maplewood house carrying a polished leather briefcase.
Theresa and Brianna were waiting in the granite-clad kitchen, dressed in brand-new silk blouses, wearing heavy makeup, with a bottle of expensive champagne already chilling on the counter.
"Nathan, darling!" Theresa cheered, rushing over to kiss my cheek. "How is poor Lucy? Did the clinic give her some cough syrup?"
"She is resting comfortably in a private clinic," I replied smoothly, setting the briefcase on the island. "Now, let’s handle the escrow paperwork before the Toronto banking window closes at noon."
Brianna leaned over the counter, practically drooling. "Yes! Show us the contracts!"
I opened the briefcase and slid three multi-page legal documents across the granite.
"The Canadian international tax authority requires a detailed accounting of all domestic assets before they release foreign injury settlement funds," I explained with clinical seriousness. "Document one: A full itemized declaration confirming that all funds sent over the past four years were your sole responsibility to manage, and that you exercised total fiduciary control over the household expenditures."
"Of course! I managed everything!" Theresa said proudly, grabbing a pen and signing her name across the dotted line on all four copies.
"Document two," I continued, sliding the next sheet to Brianna. "A commercial indemnity agreement confirming that the $38,000 invested into 'Brianna’s Glamour Nails LLC' was received directly from my wire transfers and is considered an active corporate asset subject to audit."
"Signed!" Brianna beamed, scribbling her signature with a flourish. "Whatever the bank needs, Nathan!"
"And document three," I said, looking directly into my mother's eyes. "A formal surrender of the Lincoln Navigator SUV’s master title to my holding company to serve as the liquidity collateral for the one-million-dollar wire."
Theresa hesitated for half a second. "The SUV? But Nathan, I need that to drive to church and the salon!"
"It’s just procedural collateral for the escrow board, Mom," I said with a calm, reassuring smile. "Once the million dollars lands in the account tomorrow, you can buy three more."
Theresa laughed giddily, signing the vehicle transfer deed without reading another word. "You're so right, Nathan! Why worry about a fifty-thousand-dollar car when we have a million coming!"

I gathered the signed, stamped, and notarized documents, sliding them back into my leather briefcase.
Every single confession, every trace of embezzled money, and every piece of property they thought they owned was now legally, irrevocably sealed in black and white.
