Chapter 4 - The Greed of Mother and Sister

While Lucy was safely admitted into the sterile, peaceful care of the oncology pavilion, my phone buzzed incessantly.

Nine missed calls from Theresa. Fourteen text messages from Brianna.

Brianna (8:14 PM): ‘Nathan, the real estate broker for the Main Street commercial plaza is willing to hold the lease for us if we put down a $50,000 deposit by tomorrow noon! Call me!’

Theresa (8:30 PM): ‘Nathan, I called Aunt Martha and Uncle Frank. We are hosting a grand family dinner tomorrow night to celebrate your million-dollar return. Make sure you bring the banking authorization papers!’

I sat in the hospital cafeteria, sipping black coffee, sitting across from Julian Hayes—a renowned forensic financial litigator and my late father's closest colleague.

Julian reviewed the bank statements, the deed records, and the hospital logs I had gathered over the past four hours.

"It’s an open-and-shut case of systemic elder and dependent adult abuse, fiduciary grand larceny, and criminal fraud," Julian said, tapping his gold pen against the folders. "Over forty-eight months, you wired exactly $114,000 into Theresa Vance’s account. The bank logs show she transferred $38,000 directly into Brianna’s business LLC for 'salon expansion,' spent $42,000 on the Lincoln Navigator SUV, and spent $24,000 on luxury interior remodeling."

"And the medical payments for Lucy?" I asked, my voice cold as winter ice.

"Exactly $640 across eleven months," Julian replied with disgust. "Two primary clinic copays. Nothing more."

"And what about the house deed, Julian?"

Julian smiled thinly, pulling out a certified county title certificate. "The suburban house at 442 Maplewood Drive is registered 100% under your name, Nathan. Your mother only held a conditional lifetime occupancy permit that becomes null and void upon proof of material waste, criminal conduct, or breach of fiduciary duty."

"What is our strategy, Julian?"

Julian opened a leather folio containing four crisp legal documents.

"Tomorrow night at their 'celebration dinner,' you have Theresa and Brianna sign these financial declarations under the pretense of preparing the Canadian escrow transfer. In reality, they will be signing sworn, notarized affidavits admitting they misappropriated your funds, acknowledging sole financial liability for all debts, and surrendering all property titles to you."

I looked at the documents, a ruthless, satisfied calm washing over me.

"Let them taste the million dollars in their dreams tonight," I said. "Tomorrow, the trap springs."
