Chapter 10 - Sunlight on the Coastal Horizon

Eighteen months after that dark afternoon in the backyard, the warm summer breeze swept across the cedar porch of our new coastal home in Savannah, Georgia.
The air was sweet with the fragrance of blooming jasmine, sea salt, and the soothing rhythm of ocean waves lapping against the shore.
Sitting on the porch swing was Lucy.
She looked radiant, healthy, and breathtakingly beautiful. Her cheeks were full and glowing with rosy vitality, and her thick, wavy chestnut hair had grown back down past her shoulders, catching the golden afternoon sunlight.
Around her neck, gleaming brightly against her floral sundress, hung the gold hummingbird pendant.
Dr. Bennett’s final comprehensive oncology scan last week had confirmed the miracle: Complete Remission. Zero detectable malignant cells.
With the liquidation of the Maplewood house and the recovered assets, I had opened Vance Precision Marine & Metalworks—an independent, high-tech fabrication shop along the Savannah harbor that quickly became one of the most respected custom engineering firms on the coast.
I walked out onto the porch carrying two glasses of fresh iced lemonade, sitting beside my wife and wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders.
Lucy leaned her head against my chest, listening to my steady, calm heartbeat.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" I asked softly, kissing the top of her head.
Lucy looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic, her hazel eyes shining with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.
"I was thinking about that day in the dirt," Lucy whispered, touching the hummingbird pendant over her heart. "When I was on my knees, I thought I was going to die in the dark. I never could have dreamed of this."
I tightened my grip around her, pulling her close against my soul.
"You were never going to die in the dark, Lucy," I murmured. "You are my heart, my wife, and my home. And as long as I have breath in my lungs, nothing will ever harm you again."
May you like
Lucy smiled, turning in my arms to pull me down into a tender, passionate kiss beneath the endless golden sunshine.
The cold storage sheds, the cruel sneers, and the shadows of betrayal were gone forever. Standing tall in the light of truth, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, we were finally whole—and our future was brighter than the sun.
