Chapter 6 - THE HUSBAND WHO THOUGHT HE OWNED EVERYTHING

Callum called seventeen times.
Ara answered on the eighteenth.
“Where are you?”
His voice was sharp.
She sat in the hotel suite.
“Somewhere safe.”
“Ara, this is ridiculous.”
She closed her eyes.
“You threw me outside without shoes.”
Silence.
Then:
“We were both upset.”
“You locked the door.”
“You were being unreasonable.”
Ara stared at the window.
For years, that sentence had worked.
Unreasonable.
Dramatic.
Emotional.
Words that made her question what she'd seen.
Not today.
“I've hired an attorney.”
Callum went silent.
Then laughed.
“For what?”
Ara swallowed.
“For the marriage.”
His tone changed.
“Ara.”
She continued.
“And for the trust.”
Silence.
Then:
“Who told you about that?”
Ara closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
She whispered:
“You knew.”
Callum didn't answer.

Ara ended the call.
And for the first time, she didn't feel guilty.
