Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE CADILLAC

“That,” Lucien Valeri said, “is the reason I came tonight.”

Ara stared at the bracelet.

The silver chain was delicate, with a single blue stone set into an oval clasp. Her mother had worn it for twenty-six years, removing it only when she worked in the garden.

When her mother died, Ara had inherited three things: a box of handwritten recipes, a photograph taken on Lake Michigan, and that bracelet.

Three months earlier, it had vanished from her jewelry drawer.

Callum had said she was careless.

Ara had believed him.

Now the bracelet lay on the back seat of a stranger's Cadillac.

“Where did you find it?”

Lucien glanced at her bare feet.

“Inside first.”

“I need to know.”

“And I will tell you. But you are freezing.”

Behind them, Callum stepped off the porch.

“Whatever this is, we can discuss it inside.”

Lucien didn't look at him.

“Ara?”

She looked up.

“Would you prefer a hospital, a hotel, or somewhere private where you can warm up?”

Her teeth were beginning to chatter.

“A hotel.”

Lucien nodded.

“Then a hotel.”

He stepped aside.

Ara climbed into the Cadillac.

The leather seat was warm.

A folded wool blanket rested beside the envelope.

She pulled it around her shoulders.

Lucien spoke to his driver.

“Mercer House.”

Then he turned toward the townhouse.

Callum stood beneath the porch light.

His expression had changed from anger to calculation.

“Lucien, there's been a misunderstanding.”

Lucien looked at the open suitcase lying in the snow.

“Has there?”

“Ara and I had an argument.”

“Apparently.”

“She's my wife.”

Lucien's expression remained unreadable.

“That doesn't make her your property.”

Callum's jaw tightened.

“You don't understand our marriage.”

Lucien glanced toward Ara.

She was watching through the open car door.

“Perhaps not,” he said. “But I understand a locked door.”

Then he closed the Cadillac door.

As the car pulled away, Ara looked back.

Callum stood in the snow.

For the first time in eleven years, he was the one left outside.
