Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT HARPER DISAPPEARED
Harper left work at 6:15 p.m.
She intended to meet Victor at home.
But someone was waiting near the parking garage.
A man stepped into her path.
“Mrs. Roman?”
She stopped.
“Who are you?”
He smiled.
“Someone who wants to talk.”
Harper stepped backward.
“No.”
He moved closer.
She turned toward the building entrance.
Then another man appeared.
Her heart pounded.
She took out her phone.
One of them reached for her arm.
Harper shouted.
A security guard heard her.
The men fled.
Police arrived.
Harper gave a statement.
Then called Victor.
He answered immediately.
“Harper?”
Her voice shook.
“Someone tried to grab me.”
Silence.
Then Victor asked:
“Where are you?”
She told him.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Stay with the police. I'm coming.”
When he arrived, his face was pale.
He crossed the lobby.
Stopped in front of her.
And asked:
“Can I hold you?”
Harper nodded.
He wrapped his arms around her.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Victor whispered:
“I was afraid I'd lost you.”
Harper closed her eyes.
“You didn't.”

He held her tighter.
“And I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you stay safe.”
