Chapter 15 - THE WEDDING THAT FINALLY BELONGED TO HER

Two years after Derek Whitmore's wedding, Harper stood beneath a canopy of white roses.

Not at the Alderwick Hotel.

Not in a ballroom filled with strangers.

But in the garden behind the house she shared with Victor.

They were already married.

Legally.

Privately.

Completely.

But they had never celebrated with the people they loved.

So they decided to renew their vows.

Harper wore a simple ivory dress.

Not expensive.

Not designed to impress anyone.

Just beautiful.

Victor waited beneath the flowers.

His dark hair had more silver now.

His expression was softer.

And when he saw her, his eyes filled with tears.

Harper smiled.

“You're crying.”

He laughed.

“Don't tell anyone.”

She stepped closer.

“Your secret's safe.”

They exchanged vows.

Victor promised honesty.

Respect.

And a life where Harper would never have to earn love by sacrificing herself.

Harper promised to stand beside him.

To tell him the truth.

To challenge him.

And to love the man he had chosen to become.

When the ceremony ended, Victor kissed her.

Their guests cheered.

Later, they stood together beneath the porch lights.

Harper looked toward the garden.

“Do you remember the Alderwick?”

Victor smiled faintly.

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed.

“The wine?”

He nodded.

“The groomsman?”

Victor's expression darkened.

Harper touched his arm.

“Victor.”

He smiled.

“I'm behaving.”

She laughed.

Then grew serious.

“You know what I remember most?”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“The handkerchief.”

Victor blinked.

She smiled.

“You didn't grab me.”

Her eyes filled.

“You didn't make a scene.”

“You offered me something clean when everyone else was happy to watch me stand there covered in wine.”

Victor's expression softened.

Harper continued:

“And then you asked if I wanted to leave.”

He took her hand.

“You deserved a choice.”

She nodded.

“I know that now.”

For a long moment, they stood together.

Then Victor whispered:

“I love you, Harper Roman.”

She smiled.

“I love you too.”

He kissed her forehead.

And as the garden lights glowed around them, Harper remembered the woman she'd been two years earlier.

Standing in a ruined dress.

Trying not to cry.

Believing the man who had abandoned her was right about her worth.

She wished she could go back.

Not to change anything.

But to tell that woman what was coming.

That the man walking across the ballroom wasn't going to save her by making Derek jealous.

He was going to love her by refusing to let Derek define her.

That one day she'd stop measuring her value against someone else's success.

That she'd finish her degree.

Build a career.

Find peace.

And marry a man who didn't need her to become smaller so he could feel powerful.

Victor squeezed her hand.

“Ready to go inside?”

Harper looked at the house.

The yellow kitchen.

The warm windows.

The life they'd built.

Then smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

And together, they walked home.
