Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO CROSSED THE BALLROOM

“Was it personal when you discussed her in your wedding speech?”
Victor Roman's voice carried through the silent ballroom.
Derek Whitmore looked as though someone had struck him.
“I don't know what you mean.”
Victor tilted his head.
“Twenty minutes ago, you congratulated yourself on leaving dead weight behind.”
Derek swallowed.
“It was a joke.”
“Was it?”
Victor glanced toward the groomsman.
“And pouring wine on a woman's dress?”
The man lowered his eyes.
“An accident.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“Interesting.”
Harper stood beside him, clutching the white handkerchief.
She wanted to disappear.
Not because she'd done anything wrong.
Because three hundred strangers were watching her humiliation turn into a confrontation she didn't understand.
“Mr. Roman,” she whispered.
Victor looked down.
“Yes?”
“It's okay.”
His expression softened.
“Is it?”
She hesitated.
Then shook her head.
“No.”
Something changed in his eyes.
He turned toward Derek.
“Apologize.”
Derek blinked.
“What?”
“To her.”
Madison rose from the wedding table.
“Victor, this is ridiculous.”
Victor didn't look at her.
Derek glanced toward Graham Hayes.
His new father-in-law stood motionless.
“Derek,” Graham said quietly.
The warning in his voice was unmistakable.
Derek turned toward Harper.
“I'm sorry.”
Victor waited.
Derek's jaw tightened.
“For the misunderstanding.”
Victor's expression didn't change.
“That wasn't an apology.”
Harper felt her cheeks burn.
She stepped forward.
“Victor.”
He looked at her.
She shook her head.
“Please.”
For several seconds, he studied her face.
Then he nodded.
“Of course.”
He offered his arm.
“Would you like to leave?”
Harper stared.
The question was so simple.
So unexpected.
Nobody had asked what she wanted all evening.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Victor smiled faintly.
“Then let's go.”
Derek stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Victor stopped.
Derek looked between them.
“Why are you doing this?”
Victor's expression became unreadable.
“Because you insulted someone important to me.”
Derek frowned.
“Important?”
Victor turned toward Harper.
His voice softened.
“Darling, do you want me to tell them?”
Harper's heart stopped.
She stared at him.
Then at the three hundred guests.
She had spent four months keeping their marriage private.
Four months learning how to live with a man whose name frightened powerful people.
Four months discovering that the most dangerous man she'd ever met could also be the gentlest.
She had wanted privacy.
Not secrecy.
But tonight, standing in a ruined dress while Derek smiled at her suffering, she was tired of hiding.
Harper took Victor's hand.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Victor turned toward the room.
His voice remained perfectly calm.
May you like
“Harper Lane is my wife.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
