Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SETTLEMENT

The morning after Derek's wedding, Harper woke to twenty-seven missed calls.
Some were from people she hadn't spoken to in years.
Others were from strangers.
Several were from Derek.
She ignored them.
Victor entered the bedroom carrying coffee.
“Good morning.”
Harper groaned.
“Is it?”
He smiled.
“Depends.”
She sat up.
“On what?”
“Whether you want breakfast in bed.”
She laughed.
“That's a dangerous offer.”
Victor handed her the cup.
Then sat beside her.
“There's something you should know.”
Her smile faded.
“What?”
“Graham Hayes called my office.”
Harper stiffened.
“Why?”
Victor's expression became serious.
“He wants to discuss a pending settlement involving one of his firm's clients.”
Harper frowned.
“What settlement?”
Victor hesitated.
Then said:
“A medical supply company.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Which one?”
Victor looked at her.
“Sterling Medical Distribution.”
Harper went still.
May you like
That was the company where she worked.
And suddenly, the wedding no longer felt like an isolated act of cruelty.
