Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT VICTOR ROMAN MADE HER AN OFFER

Four months earlier, Harper had met Victor Roman in a hospital waiting room.

She was there because her mother had fallen and fractured her hip.

Victor was there because an elderly employee from one of his shipping companies had suffered a heart attack.

Harper didn't know who he was.

She only noticed the expensive suit.

The exhausted eyes.

And the fact that he'd been standing for nearly three hours while other people occupied the chairs.

She offered him her seat.

He declined.

She insisted.

He smiled.

Then sat.

They began talking.

Not about money.

Not about business.

About terrible hospital coffee.

About Philadelphia traffic.

About the strange loneliness of waiting for news you couldn't control.

Victor asked what she did.

She told him about her work.

The diner.

The medical supply company.

The invoices she processed.

The accounting classes she was taking at night.

He listened.

Really listened.

When she mentioned that she'd once helped a boyfriend through law school, Victor asked:

“And what did he do for you?”

Harper laughed bitterly.

“Left.”

Victor's expression changed.

“I'm sorry.”

She shrugged.

“Life happens.”

He looked at her.

“Sometimes people happen to us.”

The sentence stayed with her.

Over the following weeks, they met again.

Coffee.

Dinner.

Long conversations.

Victor never hid that his businesses had a complicated history.

He told her there were things he was trying to change.

Things he wasn't proud of.

And things he couldn't ask her to excuse.

Harper appreciated the honesty.

When he proposed marriage three months later, she initially refused.

Not because she didn't love him.

Because she feared losing herself inside his world.

Victor listened.

Then said:

“Marry me only if you can still be Harper Lane afterward.”

She stared at him.

He smiled.

“I don't want a possession.”

His voice softened.

May you like

“I want a partner.”

And that was when Harper knew.
