Chapter 8 - The Interrogation of Two Conspirators

================================================================================
By 2:00 PM the following afternoon, inside the windowless interrogation suites at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, Helen and Rebecca sat in separate holding rooms.
Prosecutor Amanda Vance tossed the 4K video transcripts and the forged bank records onto the table in front of Helen.
Helen looked unrecognizable. Her styled hair was disheveled, her designer jewelry confiscated, her wrists bound to the steel table by heavy transport chains.
“You're facing Attempted Capital Murder of an Infant, Aggravated Arson, and Grand Larceny, Mrs. Miller,” Prosecutor Vance announced with chilling neutrality. “You are looking at twenty-five to thirty years in the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.”
Helen began to hyperventilate, tears and mascara running down her pale cheeks.
“It was Rebecca!” Helen screamed, pointing frantically toward the adjoining interrogation room. “Rebecca told me Margaret was having the baby to humiliate her! Rebecca said if we didn't teach Margaret a lesson, she would take the family inheritance! I only meant to drop the blanket near the stones to frighten her! I didn't want the baby to burn!”
In the neighboring room, Rebecca was singing a completely different tune.
“My mother is psychotic!” Rebecca sobbed to the detectives, clutching her face. “She controlled my whole life! She forced me to take the Belize money! She pushed me in front of Margaret by the fire pit! I tried to catch the baby! Look at my hands!”
Behind the two-way observation glass, Deputy Marcus Vance shook his head in pure disgust.
“Mother and daughter,” Marcus murmured. “They threw a baby toward a fire pit, and the moment the handcuffs snapped, they started eating each other alive.”

I stood beside the glass, holding my sleeping daughter. I felt no rage, no lingering hatred—only the clean, pristine peace of a mother who had watched the truth burn away every single shadow.
