Chapter 6 - The Burn Ward and the Awakening

The MedStar Washington Burn Center smelled of sterile iodine, biological hydrogels, and cold air.
For forty-eight hours, Dad remained in the high-dependency burn unit. Dr. Marcus Thorne, the chief of reconstructive surgery, supervised the debridement of his thoracic burns.
“Your father is an extraordinary man, Margaret,” Dr. Thorne told me as I sat outside the glass recovery suite, nursing six-week-old Lily. “The burns cover twenty-eight percent of his posterior torso. A fraction of an inch deeper and the heat would have scorched his pleural cavity. But the skin grafting was clean. He will recover full mobility.”
When the anesthesia cleared, Dad was moved to a private step-down room.
I walked in carrying Lily, whose soft pink cheeks were pressed against a fresh fleece blanket.
Dad sat propped up on sterile pillows, bandages wrapping his back and shoulders, but his face was bright. When he saw his granddaughter, a broad, radiant smile spread across his lips.
“Bring her here, Margaret,” Dad whispered.
I gently placed Lily into the cradle of his uninjured right arm. She cooed softly, her tiny hand reaching out to grasp his rough thumb.
Dad’s eyes brimmed with quiet, joyful tears. “Thirty years, Margaret. For thirty years, I convinced myself that keeping the peace meant swallowing every cruelty Helen dished out. I watched her make you feel small, watched her spoil Rebecca into a monster, and I thought being quiet was being a good husband.”
He looked up at me, his gaze firm and resolved.
“When I saw Lily in the air, something broke open in my chest. Peace built on cruelty isn't peace at all. It’s cowardice. Never again.”
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Victoria Sterling—one of Virginia’s most formidable family and estate litigators—stepped into the room carrying a heavy black leather briefcase.

“Mr. Miller, Margaret,” Victoria said, pulling up a chair. “The prosecutor’s office has filed the formal indictments. But there is another matter you need to see before the arraignment tomorrow morning.”
