Chapter 5 - The Sister’s Hollow Tears

Helen let out a piercing, animalistic shriek as Deputy Vance twisted her wrists behind her and snapped the cold iron cuffs shut.
“James! Tell them!” Helen screamed, thrashing against the deputy’s grip. “Tell them you tripped! Rebecca, do something!”
Rebecca backed away toward the patio table, her polished composure completely disintegrating into hysterical tears. “Deputy, wait! I didn't touch the baby! I was just standing there! It was all Mom! Mom has been obsessive about the pregnancy for months! I tried to stop her!”
Guests stared at Rebecca with open revulsion. The neighbors she had schmoozed minutes earlier turned their backs on her in disgust.
“Rebecca Miller,” the secondary deputy stepped forward, pulling a second pair of cuffs from his belt. “You are being detained as an accessory to attempted felony homicide and obstruction of a medical emergency.”
“No! I’m the victim here!” Rebecca wailed, her hands locked behind her back as she was led down the driveway in her ruined silk dress. “Margaret stole my life! She was supposed to wait for me!”
As the cruisers hauled the two screaming women away into the summer afternoon, the ambulance doors closed on my father.
I climbed into the front passenger seat with Lily secured in her car seat, holding my father’s blistered hand through the partition window.
“Hang in there, Dad,” I choked out, tears finally blurring my vision. “You saved her. You saved both of us.”
Dad looked at me through his oxygen mask, his tired grey eyes clearer and more alive than I had seen them in thirty years.
May you like
“No more hiding, Margaret,” he breathed. “The fire is out.”
