Chapter 4 - The Siren’s Arrival

================================================================================
Within four minutes, the wail of sirens shattered the quiet Virginia neighborhood.
Two ambulances and three Cruisers from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office tore into the gravel driveway, red and blue strobe lights flashing against the white picket fence.
Paramedics sprinted into the backyard with trauma kits and a burn stretcher.
“Severe second-degree and third-degree thermal burns across the posterior thoracic region!” the lead medic announced, applying sterile saline cool-packs across my father’s back. “Get him on high-flow oxygen and prep an IV line with fentanyl!”
Deputy Marcus Vance and two armed deputies stepped into the center of the lawn, surveying the blackened fire pit, the spilled wine, and the weeping guests.
Helen rushed toward Deputy Vance, her eyes wide with manufactured terror. “Officer! Thank God you're here! My daughter Margaret is having a postpartum mental breakdown! She attacked my husband and caused this horrific fire!”
Deputy Vance didn't even look at her. He walked straight to where I sat holding Lily, kneeling beside the paramedic who was checking my daughter’s vitals.
“Is the infant injured?” Deputy Vance asked gently.
“No thermal trauma, Officer,” the medic reported. “Vitals stable. Lungs clear.”
I looked at Deputy Vance and held up my unlocked smartphone.
“Deputy,” I said, my voice rock-solid. “I am Margaret Miller. The entire incident was live-streamed and archived to my cloud server from that porch camera. I have the unedited footage ready for evidence seizure.”
I hit play.
The deputy watched the screen:
Helen lifting Lily above the flames.
Helen’s clear, audible declaration: “You gave birth before your sister... you betrayed us.”
Rebecca intentionally stepping into my path to block my rescue.
Helen bending her elbows and violently hurling the infant downward into the burning pit.
And James diving horizontally through the fire to catch the baby.
Deputy Vance’s jaw locked into an expression of absolute, disgust-filled fury.
He turned around, unholstering heavy steel handcuffs.

“Helen Miller,” Deputy Vance commanded. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for Attempted Capital Murder of an Infant and Felony Child Abuse.”
