Chapter 3 - The Red Lens on the Porch

“Someone call 911!” a cousin yelled from the lawn.
Helen’s shock broke, but instead of remorse, an ugly, frantic panic twisted her features. She took a step toward me, her voice shrill and defensive.
“It was an accident!” Helen shouted, waving her hands at the staring neighbors. “The baby wriggled! The blanket was slippery! James jumped like a madman and knocked her into the rocks!”
Rebecca scrambled to her feet, brushing dirt from her designer dress, rushing to stand beside our mother. “Yes! Mom stumbled! Margaret lunged at her and caused her to lose her footing! It was Margaret’s fault!”
I sat in the grass, holding my crying daughter tight against my chest with my left hand, while supporting my father’s head with my right.
I looked up at the woman who gave birth to me and the sister who had enabled her madness.
“You threw my baby into a fire, Helen,” I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the chaos like an icy blade.
“You have no proof of such a monstrous lie!” Helen shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. “Who will believe you over your own mother and sister?!”
My father grunted, struggling to lift his soot-stained face from the grass. He pointed a trembling, blistered finger toward the white maple tree beside the porch rail.
“The camera, Helen,” Dad whispered, a faint, cold smile breaking through his grimace of pain.
Helen froze. “What?”
“The architectural motion camera Margaret installed two weeks ago to survey the roof restoration,” Dad coughed, looking straight into Helen’s terrified eyes. “It’s high-definition. It records audio. And the red light has been blinking all afternoon.”
Every head in the yard snapped toward the eaves of the porch.
Perched beneath the cedar overhang, nestled behind a cluster of pink ribbons, was the wide-angle 4K security lens—its tiny red indicator light pulsing steadily.

Helen’s face drained of every ounce of blood.
