Chapter 10 - Sunlight on the Hillside

================================================================================
One year after that terrifying afternoon at the fire pit, the warm morning sun rose over the rolling green hills of our Virginia homestead in a blaze of brilliant gold and amber light.
The old stone fire pit had been completely dismantled. In its place stood a magnificent, sun-drenched flower garden filled with blooming white hydrangeas, purple lavender, and a brand-new cedar gazebo handcrafted by my father's own hands.
The air was sweet with the fragrance of blooming honeysuckle, fresh-cut grass, and warm cinnamon peach cobbler baking in the farmhouse kitchen.
The sprawling lawn was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the joyful chatter of loved ones.
Fourteen-month-old Lily—radiant, healthy, and full of boundless energy—was running across the soft clover in tiny red sneakers, chasing our golden retriever puppy, Barnaby. Her laughter rang out clear and pure against the summer breeze.
Dad walked out of the workshop, wearing a comfortable denim shirt and work boots, holding a beautifully carved wooden rocking horse he had built for Lily’s upcoming birthday.
His back was strong, his posture tall and unburdened, and his eyes were filled with an eternal, unshakable peace.
“Look at her run, Margaret,” Dad smiled warmly, resting a hand on my shoulder as we stood by the porch rail.
“She runs fast, Dad,” I laughed, leaning my head gently against his arm. “She has her grandfather’s strength.”
Lily spotted the wooden rocking horse, let out a joyful squeal, and came sprinting across the grass, throwing her small arms tightly around Dad’s knees.
Dad laughed—a deep, booming, happy sound that filled the entire valley—and scooped his granddaughter high into the golden morning sunlight.
“Happy birthday, my little bird,” Dad whispered, kissing her rosy cheek.

I looked out across the sun-drenched meadow where the breeze danced through the trees.
The pink ribbons, the bitter smoke, the lies, and the fear were gone forever. Standing together in the warmth of truth, honor, and unconditional love, our family was whole—and our light would never be extinguished again.
