Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Legal Protection

================================================================================
Three months later, Courtroom 4B of the New York Family Court convened for a private, historic judicial session.
Chief Judge Evelyn Wright sat at the bench, looking down with warm, grandmotherly eyes at the small group gathered before her.
Sitting at the petitioner’s table was Alexander Vance, dressed in a tailored navy suit, flanked by Chief Legal Counsel Samuel Price. Beside Alexander sat Ethan and myself.
Judge Wright adjusted her spectacles, reviewing the thick stack of social work assessments, psychological evaluations, and background certifications.
“The court has reviewed the petition for direct, unconditional legal adoption in the matter of minor child Lily Foster,” Judge Wright announced, her voice soft yet resonant in the wood-paneled room.
She looked down at Alexander. “Mr. Vance, do you solemnly promise to love, protect, cherish, and provide for Lily Foster as your own biological daughter, bestowing upon her all rights of family, heritage, and name?”
Alexander looked at me, his blue eyes shining with unspeakable love and devotion.
“I do, Your Honor,” Alexander answered with unshakable conviction. “With every breath I have.”
Judge Wright looked down at me. “And Lily, do you accept Alexander Vance as your lawful father and Ethan Vance as your brother?”
I felt Ethan squeeze my hand tightly beside me. I looked at Alexander—the man who had given me his coat in the snow, who had defended my dignity, and who had given me a home.
“Yes, Your Honor,” I smiled through tears of pure, unburdened joy. “I do.”
Judge Wright brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a sharp, resonant CRACK.
“By the authority vested in me by the State of New York, I hereby declare Lily Foster to be the lawful, permanent daughter of Alexander Vance, henceforth named Lily Foster Vance. May God bless this family.”
Ethan cheered, throwing his arms around my neck, while Alexander scooped both of us into his arms, lifting us off the ground in a warm, unbreakable embrace as tears of joy spilled over our cheeks.

The cold was gone forever. I was finally, truly home.
