Chapter 3 - The Fortress on Fifth Avenue

The convoy arrived at the private underground entrance of the Vance Tower on Fifth Avenue within fifteen minutes.
While a private medical team rushed Ethan to the estate’s private medical wing on the 14th floor to treat his acute hypothermia and a fractured ankle, Alexander carried me directly into the grand penthouse suite.
The home was a vast, warm sanctuary of polished walnut, soaring glass walls overlooking Central Park, and soft Persian rugs. The air smelled of vanilla and crackling firewood.
Alexander gently set me down on a plush velvet sofa beside a towering stone hearth.
“Mrs. Gable,” Alexander called out.
An elderly, kind-faced woman in an apron hurried out of the kitchen, her eyes wide with concern. “Mr. Vance! Thank God! How is little Ethan?”
“Ethan is stabilized and in the medical wing,” Alexander answered. “This is Lily. She saved Ethan’s life in the park. Prepare the warm guest suite, run a hot bath, and bring up hot chicken soup, fresh bread, and warm clothes immediately.”
“Right away, sir,” Mrs. Gable said, her gaze softening into pure warmth as she looked at my thin frame.
Alexander sat in the armchair opposite me, watching as I curled my legs beneath the massive cashmere coat, marveling at the warmth of the fire.
“Lily,” Alexander asked gently, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “Where are your parents?”
My fingers tightened around the wool fabric. “My mother died when I was seven. My father got sick last year... and three weeks ago, our landlord changed the locks on our apartment because we couldn't pay the rent. The city shelters wouldn't take my stray dog, so I stayed in the park.”
A dark, dangerous shadow passed across Alexander’s jaw—a quiet, burning anger not directed at me, but at the cruelty of the world that would let a nine-year-old girl freeze on a park bench.
“What happened to your dog, Lily?”
“He ran away when the two men chased Ethan into the ravine,” I whispered.
Alexander went completely rigid. His eyes flared with a lethal, razor-sharp focus.

“What men, Lily?”
