Chapter 2 - The Warmth of a Stranger's Cashmere

Everyone on the path froze.
The paramedics carrying the stretcher paused. The four armed private security guards lowered their radios. The freezing wind whistled through the bare branches of the oak trees, whipping cold air across my bare skin.
Alexander Vance slowly stood up.
He was a commanding figure—tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp, sculpted features and silver-flecked dark hair. In the business journals and financial headlines, he was known as the "Iron Titan" of Vance Global Capital. But standing in the snow under the flickering streetlamps, he looked only like a father whose heart had been torn open and stitched back together in the span of ten minutes.
He unbuttoned his heavy, dark cashmere overcoat.
I took another step back, my heel sinking into the freezing mud. “I’m okay, sir. I’m used to it.”
Alexander didn't answer with words. He closed the distance between us in two long, quiet strides, gently draped the massive coat over my bare shoulders, and knelt in the snow so our eyes were level.
The wool was thick, lined with silk, and carrying the warm scent of cedar and clean rain. For the first time in three weeks, the biting chill stopped gnawing at my bones.
“You saved my boy’s life tonight, Lily,” Alexander said, his voice deep, steady, and vibrating with profound emotion. “A child who saves my son will never spend another second in the cold.”
“I don't have anywhere to go,” I whispered, looking down at my worn, water-soaked sneakers.
“You’re coming with us,” Alexander replied, reaching out with a large, warm, gloved hand.
I hesitated. The fear of being locked away or questioned by authorities flared in my chest.
From the stretcher, Ethan lifted his head weakly, reaching out his small hand toward mine. “Lily, please come. I want you to meet Gerald, my toy bear.”
Looking at Ethan’s hopeful eyes and the billionaire kneeling before me in the mud, the heavy wall of survival I had built around my heart cracked.
I placed my small, dirt-streaked hand into Alexander’s palm.

Alexander closed his fingers gently around mine, stood up, and lifted me effortlessly into his arms, wrapping the heavy coat tight around me as he walked toward the convoy of black SUVs.
