Chapter 9 - The Handcuffs at Sunset

The double doors of the boardroom swung open for the final time that morning.
Senior Detective Marcus Cole of the NYPD Financial Crimes Division entered, accompanied by six armed federal agents.
“Victor Vance, Julianna Sterling,” Detective Cole announced, stepping forward with an unsealed federal indictment. “You are under arrest for Corporate Espionage, Grand Larceny, Forgery, and Criminal Conspiracy to Defraud.”
Two female officers pulled Julianna to her feet, twisting her manicured arms behind her back.
Click. Snap.
The heavy steel handcuffs locked around her wrists with a sharp, resonant crack.
“Adrian! Please!” Julianna shrieked, thrashing against their grip, her designer dress tearing at the shoulder as her makeup was ruined by tears. “My father is your biggest investor! You can’t let them take me to jail! I did it because I love you!”
Adrian did not even look in her direction. He stepped beside me, placing a warm, protective hand gently on the small of my back.
“Your father liquidated his shares and resigned from the board twenty minutes ago, Julianna,” Adrian said in a calm, icy voice. “He chose his company over your freedom.”
Victor Vance was forced onto his knees on the carpet, cuffed, and hauled to his feet, weeping like a broken coward as press cameras—tipped off in the lobby—began flashing through the glass elevators.
As the officers escorted the two criminals down the grand executive corridor, the boardroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause from the investors and board members.
Lord Montgomery walked over to me, extending a warm hand of profound respect.
“Ms. Hayes,” Lord Montgomery smiled warmly. “After witnessing your grace under fire and reviewing your extraordinary branding portfolio, the Crown Imperial Group is doubling our global contract to two hundred million dollars—under the sole condition that you lead the creative direction.”
I shook his hand, tears of vindication and joy blurring my vision. “Thank you, Lord Montgomery. We will deliver something unforgettable.”
I turned to Adrian. His gray-blue eyes were shining with overwhelming pride.
“You did it, Elena,” he whispered softly.
May you like
“We did it,” I smiled back.
