Chapter 5 - The Poison in the Boardroom

Over the next three weeks, the dynamic inside Blackwell & Reed shifted dramatically.
Adrian Kane—the man famous for ninety-hour workweeks and impenetrable emotional walls—began leaving the office at 6:00 PM. He showed up at Mia’s school play in a discreet dark blazer, sitting in the back row with a cup of takeout coffee, clapping enthusiastically when Mia delivered her two lines as a dancing sunflower. He helped Mia assemble a complex Lego castle in our modest Brooklyn apartment while I cooked homemade chicken pasta, his laughter filling the small living room with an unfamiliar, intoxicating warmth.
For the first time in six years, I felt safe. I felt seen.
But in the shadows of the corporate hierarchy, jealousy was festering into a lethal conspiracy.
Inside the private executive dining lounge of the Manhattan Club, Julianna Sterling sat across from Chief Financial Officer Victor Vance, swirling an expensive martini.
“Adrian is losing his mind, Victor,” Julianna hissed in a low whisper. “He took that pathetic single mother to the Metropolitan Museum gala last weekend. He’s planning to nominate her for Executive Vice President at next month’s shareholder assembly.”
Victor Vance sneered, cutting into his dry-aged steak. “Elena Hayes has zero political backing. She’s an artist, not an operator. If she becomes EVP, our offshore vendor kickbacks will be audited within a week.”
“Then we make sure she never makes it to the assembly,” Julianna said, sliding a sleek, black USB thumb drive across the white linen tablecloth.
“What is this?” Victor asked, his eyes gleaming with curiosity.
“This contains the proprietary source files and unreleased branding campaign for the Crown Imperial Hotel Group—the hundred-million-dollar global account we are pitching on Friday morning,” Julianna explained with a sinister smile. “I have already created a digital transaction trail showing that Elena’s private email address sent these identical files to our biggest rival, Sterling-Cross Media, yesterday evening for a five-hundred-thousand-dollar offshore wire.”
Victor grinned, sliding the thumb drive into his breast pocket. “Corporate espionage and intellectual property theft. Adrian won't just fire her; he’ll have to press federal charges to protect the firm’s reputation.”

“And once Elena is escorted out in handcuffs,” Julianna added, raising her glass, “Adrian will have no choice but to rely on me.”
