Chapter 3 - The Billionaire's Secret Order

================================================================================

Inside Adrian’s private penthouse office, the panoramic view of Central Park stretched out beneath a crisp morning sky. The office smelled of expensive leather, polished mahogany, and rich espresso.

Mia was sitting cross-legged on a plush velvet sofa, swinging her sneakers, happily devouring a stack of warm blueberry pancakes while Gerald the Elephant sat propped up against a crystal water carafe.

Across the low glass coffee table, Adrian sat with his tailored sleeves rolled up to his forearms, reviewing my digital presentation slides on his tablet.

“Your color typography on the Aethelgard Watch campaign is brilliant, Elena,” Adrian said, not looking up from the screen as he took a sip of black coffee. “The contrast between the charcoal slate and the rose-gold bezel gives it an understated dominance.”

“Thank you, sir,” I answered, sitting on the edge of the armchair, my hands folded tightly over my cup of Earl Grey tea.

Adrian set the tablet down and leaned back, studying my face with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. “Why didn't you request the senior creative director bonus after the Parisian launch last quarter? You were entitled to forty thousand dollars under your milestone contract.”

I flinched slightly. “Chief Financial Officer Victor Vance stated that the European subsidiary’s overhead had exceeded budget. He told me the executive discretionary fund had been frozen.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. A sharp, icy gleam flashed in his gray-blue eyes.

“Victor told you that?”

“Yes, sir.”

Adrian picked up his desk phone, pressed a single speed-dial key, and spoke in a tone of quiet thunder: “Arthur. Pull the internal audit logs for the European marketing allocation from Q3. I want a forensic reconciliation of Victor Vance’s discretionary accounts on my desk by noon.”

He hung up without waiting for an answer.

Mia swallowed a bite of waffle, wiped her mouth with a cloth napkin, and looked at Adrian with innocent curiosity. “Are you angry at the mean man, Mr. Adrian?”

Adrian looked over at my daughter, and the ruthless corporate titan vanished instantly, replaced by a warm, gentle smile.

“Not angry, Mia,” Adrian answered softly. “Just making sure people get what they’ve earned.”

He looked back at me. “From today forward, you report directly to me. Not to Victor. Not to Julianna Sterling. If anyone in this building questions your authority or tries to withhold your compensation, they answer to my office.”

Before I could process the sudden shift in power, the office door swung open without a knock.

Julianna Sterling—senior marketing vice president and daughter of our primary hedge fund partner—strode into the room in a vibrant scarlet Valentino dress.

“Adrian, darling!” Julianna began with an artificial smile. “I brought the revised Scandinavian contract for your—"

She stopped dead, her eyes landing on Mia with her syrup-covered fork, then on me sitting comfortably on the sofa.

Julianna’s face twisted in pure, aristocratic disgust.

“Adrian... why is a graphic designer’s child eating breakfast on your custom leather furniture?”
