Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the Penthouse Gala

By Tuesday afternoon, the criminal trial process was accelerated under special federal domestic violence and civil rights statutes.

The three boys—Ethan Cole, Brandon Hale, and Tyler Whitmore—were held in solitary confinement at the federal detention center without eligibility for bail.

Their high-priced defense attorneys, who had initially promised a quick dismissal, abandoned the defense after reviewing the mountain of forensic evidence, cloud video backups, and the sworn confessions of the campus guards who had taken bribes.

In the district court arraignment hearing, Chief Judge Harrison looked down from the bench with zero leniency.

“The evidence before this court demonstrates a calculated, predatory, and cowardly act of extreme violence against an innocent student,” Judge Harrison declared.

Bail was officially denied on all counts:

Ethan Cole: Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Conspiracy, and Gang Violence.

Brandon Hale: Accessory to Felony Assault, Witness Tampering, and Evidence Concealment.

Tyler Whitmore: Felony Tampering with Electronic Evidence, Computer Fraud, and Facilitation of Battery.

As the three boys were hauled down the center aisle in bright orange jumpsuits and heavy steel transport chains, weeping in terror as news cameras broadcast their faces to forty million viewers nationwide, Ethan looked toward the gallery where I sat.

I didn't utter a word.

I simply met his gaze with the calm, unbroken stillness of a man who had protected his own.
