Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Cole Construction

Simultaneously, across the city in the industrial district of South Boston, Richard Cole—Ethan’s father and owner of Cole Construction—was pacing his office in a cold sweat.

The state transportation authority had just issued an emergency stop-work order on all twelve of his public highway contracts, representing $180 million in active revenue.

The office doors swung open without a knock.

I walked in, dressed in a simple dark wool overcoat, flanked by two forensic financial accountants and Detective Marcus Stone of the State Police Organized Crime Unit.

Richard Cole glared at me with bloodshot, enraged eyes. “Who the hell are you?! Get out of my office before I call my security team!”

I took a seat in the high-backed leather chair opposite his desk, resting my hands calmly over my knee.

“Your security team was disbanded ten minutes ago when their commercial licenses were revoked, Richard,” I said softly.

“I don't know who you think you are—”

“My name is Daniel Walker,” I replied, my voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on Richard’s neck stand on end. “Nineteen years ago, before I buried my name, your former business partner, Frank Moretti, worked for me.”

Richard froze. The blood drained from his face until he looked like carved ash.

“The... The Ghost...?” Richard stammered, his knees trembling so violently he had to grip his desk. “You... you disappeared twenty years ago!”

“I was living quietly, raising my daughter,” I said, looking directly into his terrified eyes. “Until your son Ethan shattered her jaw in six places with a brass knuckle.”

Richard collapsed into his executive chair, tears and sweat pouring down his cheeks. “Mr. Walker... please! He’s just a boy! He didn't know who she was! I will pay whatever you want! Ten million! Twenty million! I’ll pay for the finest surgeons in Switzerland!”

I stood up, sliding a certified court seizure order onto his mahogany desk.

“You don't have twenty million, Richard,” I said with absolute finality. “Your company is bankrupt, your assets are seized under RICO statutes, and your son Ethan will spend the next fifteen years inside a federal penitentiary for Aggravated Gang Assault and Premeditated Battery.”
