Chapter 4 - The Interrogation of Vivian Vance

By 3:00 AM, inside Interrogation Room 4 at the Central Police Precinct, Vivian Vance sat pinned beneath the harsh glare of industrial fluorescent lights.

Her tailored silk blouse was wrinkled, her silver hair disheveled, and her makeup ruined by hours of furious, bitter tears. Across the metal table sat Detective Marcus Stone and Assistant District Attorney Karen Vance (no relation).

On the table sat the high-resolution still frames captured from the exhaust-hood camera:

Vivian holding the pot at a 45-degree angle.

The exact trajectory of the boiling peanut oil striking Clara’s thoracic spine.

The thermal reading logs showing the oil was heated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit—far beyond any standard cooking temperature.

“Mrs. Vance,” ADA Karen Vance began, tapping the photograph with a pen. “Your attorney has advised you that the grand jury is reviewing an indictment for Premeditated Attempted Murder.”

“She provoked me!” Vivian screamed, slamming her cuffed hands onto the steel table. “She was fifteen minutes late with dinner! She refused to hand over the trust bank cards! She looked down on my family from the day Daniel married her!”

“Did she provoke you to heat cooking oil for forty minutes while your son was driving home?” Detective Stone asked coldly.

Vivian choked on her breath, her eyes darting away.

“We also reviewed your text messages with your sister from two days ago,” ADA Vance added, sliding a printed transcript across the table.

Vivian’s text: ‘Once Daniel secures the master trust deed, we will ensure Clara has an unfortunate accident in the kitchen. A disabled woman cannot manage commercial property.’

Vivian collapsed back into her chair, her face turning an ashen shade of grey. The premeditation was absolute, documented, and inescapable.
