Chapter 3 - The Decoy Deed and the Vault

Dr. Lena Ortiz stepped forward, sliding a thick manila folder from her white lab coat onto the rolling tray table beside my bed.

“Let’s discuss the papers you thought you filed six months ago, Daniel,” Lena said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone.

Daniel’s eyes darted frantically between the folder and my calm, bandaged face. “What are you talking about? Clara signed the transfer deed in front of a notary! The Vance Estate owns the commercial real estate portfolio!”

“I was a senior fraud prosecutor for nine years, Daniel,” I spoke softly, looking straight into his trembling eyes. “Did you really believe I wouldn't notice the missing statutory disclosure addendums you slipped between the pages?”

I signaled Lena, who opened the folder to display the certified court registry logs.

“The document you proudly filed with the county clerk was an altered dummy copy with an invalid corporate seal,” I explained. “Under Section 42 of the State Trust Code, an irrevocable trust asset cannot be transferred without a tri-party biometric authorization from the primary trustee—which remains exclusively in my name.”

“You... you tricked me?” Daniel choked out.

“You tried to steal eighteen million dollars from my late father’s estate while starving me in my own house,” I replied. “The moment you submitted that fraudulent paperwork to the commercial bank to secure your $3 million speculative crypto loan, you triggered an automated forensic audit with the Department of Justice.”

Two federal marshals stepped through the doorway, flanking Detective Stone.

“Daniel Vance,” Senior Marshal Karen Hayes announced, displaying an unsealed federal warrant. “You are indicted on twelve counts of Bank Fraud, Wire Fraud, and Aggravated Identity Theft under federal statutes.”

Daniel’s knees buckled. He collapsed onto the linoleum floor, weeping in pathetic, ragged gasps as the marshals twisted his arms behind his back and snapped the iron cuffs around his wrists.

“Clara! Please!” Daniel sobbed, looking up at me with tears smearing his designer collar. “We’re married! I love you! I did it for our future! Tell them to drop the charges!”

I looked down at the man who had stepped over my burning body.

“You wiped your shoes, Daniel,” I said, closing my eyes. “Now go wipe your prison bars.”
