Chapter 10 - THE LETTER FROM ROSE
A week later, Amelia received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph.
Rose stood beside a small wooden cabin.
She looked thinner.
Older.
But alive.
On the back, in her handwriting, were four words.
I'M SAFE. DON'T TRUST JULIAN.
Amelia collapsed onto the sofa.
She cried until she could barely breathe.
Then called Detective Brooks.
Investigators examined the envelope.
The postmark led to a rural area in Vermont.
A search began.
Alessandro offered logistical assistance through his legitimate businesses, but the investigation remained under law enforcement control.
Amelia waited.
Every hour felt like a year.
Then, three days later, her phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
“Amelia.”
Her voice was gentle.
“We found her.”
Amelia couldn't speak.
