Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE RUSSO FAMILY
The first betrayal came from inside Damian's organization.
Enzo discovered that someone had been accessing security records.
Naomi's schedule.
Her apartment address.
The restoration shop.
Damian called an emergency meeting.
The investigation led to Salvatore Russo.
Sal.
The man who had been sitting across from Naomi when her scarf slipped.
Damian stared at him.
“Why?”
Sal looked away.
“Victor promised me a share.”
Damian's expression hardened.
“Victor is dead.”
Sal laughed bitterly.
“His money isn't.”
Sal admitted he'd been helping Caleb locate Naomi.
He claimed he hadn't known Caleb would hurt her.
Damian didn't believe him.
The matter was turned over to authorities along with the evidence of threats and financial misconduct.
That evening, Naomi sat beside Damian.
“You trusted him.”
Damian nodded.
“For twenty years.”
She swallowed.
“I'm sorry.”
He looked at her.
“Don't be.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
He took her hand.
“Because I'd rather know the truth than keep living inside a lie.”
