Chapter 6 - A SECRET BURIED IN NEWARK

The ledger pointed toward a warehouse in Newark.
Seven years earlier, a shipment had disappeared.
Officially, the loss was blamed on a fire.
But the records suggested the cargo had been moved before the building burned.
Naomi's attorney, Rebecca Shaw, reviewed the documents.
“This could be important.”
Naomi swallowed.
“Important how?”
Rebecca pointed to several entries.
“Your father appears to have documented inconsistencies that may relate to financial crimes.”
Naomi stared.
“Was he involved?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“We don't know.”
Later, Damian met Naomi at a quiet restaurant.
He looked exhausted.
She placed the ledger between them.
“I need the truth.”
Damian nodded.
“You deserve it.”
He explained that the Newark warehouse had been controlled by his uncle, Victor Russo.
Victor had used the legitimate shipping business to conceal illegal transactions.
Damian had spent years trying to separate the lawful company from the criminal operation he'd inherited.
Naomi stared.
“And Caleb?”
Damian looked down.
“He was Victor's courier.”
She swallowed.
“Did he steal the shipment?”
“We believed so.”
“And my father?”
Damian hesitated.
Then said, “He may have discovered what happened.”

Naomi looked at the ledger.
For the first time, she wondered whether her father's financial troubles had been connected to something much darker than medical bills.
