Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO LOST HIS EMPIRE

Alexander began dismantling the criminal operations he'd inherited.

He had spent years believing power meant control.

Now he understood that control had cost him everything.

His wife.

His daughter.

His peace.

He contacted legal counsel.

Began cooperating with investigators.

And separated his legitimate businesses from the criminal network.

The process was painful.

Several associates turned against him.

Financial accounts were frozen.

His influence weakened.

And the man who once controlled Chicago discovered how quickly power could disappear.

One evening, he stood alone in the mansion.

Mrs. Bell approached.

“Sir.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“There's something you should know.”

He stared.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“Claire left a letter.”

Alexander froze.

Mrs. Bell handed him an envelope.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it.

Inside were three sentences.

I loved you when you had nothing to prove.

You stopped seeing me when you decided power mattered more than kindness.

I hope our daughter never learns to accept the kind of love you offered me.

May you like

Alexander sat down.

And cried.
