Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH THAT DESTROYED THE MARRIAGE
Vanessa's lies finally unraveled.
Investigators discovered she'd arranged payments to people who had been spreading false information about Claire.
She had also attempted to obtain private medical records.
Her actions resulted in legal consequences.
Alexander confronted the truth.
He had allowed Vanessa into his life.
Encouraged her expectations.
And humiliated his wife.
But Vanessa hadn't destroyed his marriage alone.
He had.
One evening, Alexander asked Claire whether they could talk.
She agreed.
They met in a quiet park.
Hope slept in her stroller.
Alexander looked at Claire.
“I was wrong.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I treated you like you had nowhere else to go.”
Claire looked toward the trees.
“You did.”
His eyes filled.
“I thought you'd always stay.”
She looked back.
“And that's why I had to leave.”
Silence.
Alexander nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“No.”
May you like
A pause.
“But maybe someday you will.”
